Digital & Print Magazine Production Assessment

Digital magazines and print magazines contain both similarities and their differences which benefit the reader. For example a digital magazine can be displayed on a tablet, phone, laptop and many other devices which will benefit the reader as it will be an easier and quicker way to smoothly skip through pages when reading the magazine by the click of an arrow or press of an arrow on a keyboard. However, a print magazine is a physical copy therefore the reader will have to turn over pages which isn't an issue but it will not feel as smooth and simple as easily switching page by a click or press of a button. A print magazine could be considered as featureless judging on its function compared to a digital magazine based on the fact that it only consists of paper pages that cant be zoomed in to in order for the reader to see the information more clearly or that images shown in a print magazine cant be clicked on to lead to a link that is embedded within the magazine that can lead to something that is sure to further interest the reader. Digital magazines give the reader the ease of being able to download and read a magazine at home rather than having to walk to the shop to pick up a paper copy. A lot of magazines are now sold in digital copies as well as print so that they can reach out to more people such as younger audiences as they are more likely to use laptops or other devices.
Features of the magazine:
Large dominant image is used in a magazine front cover so that it becomes the readers main interest and so that the readers attention is instantly drawn towards the magazine because they are interested about what is pictured in the image which in this case is Tom Hardy as Venom. If the dominant image happens to not be interesting it is likely that the reader will not purchase the magazine or even look at the front cover for longer than a glance as they are not drawn in at first sight meaning that they will not want to read the magazine as the information that it contains will not appeal to them. The dominant image is always relevant to what the magazine entails because if it wasn't this would firstly not make sense as the information within the magazine wouldn't match with the image which is on display and also this would mislead the reader and more than likely convince them to not purchase the magazine at all or ever again.
Masthead is used at the top of the magazine to identify the name of the magazine which in this case is "TOTAL FILM". After reading the masthead, the reader may already have an opinion on whether the contents of the magazine will be suited to their interest because they may judge on how popular and trusted the magazine is.
Headline is used to inform the reader about the main topic that the magazine will be talking about which in this case is "VENOM". Above this headline is a sub head line which reads, "TOM HARDY IS..." This sub head line is used in this magazine to show the reader which actor will be playing the role of Venom in the film and this is written in smaller text so that the main stand out text is "VENOM" as this is the film that is being advertised in the front cover and this will be the text that is sure to hype up the reader the most if they are interested about the film or even the comics about Venom.
Sub headings are used in a magazine front cover to give the reader an insight on what other stories are talked about within the magazine. For example, in this magazine front cover the sub headings are about 2 famous actors "Jack Black" and "Nic Cage". These sub headings are shown in the front cover to further interest the reader as they may be more interested about reading the magazine now knowing that these 2 very well known actors are talked about as well as Tom Hardy who stars in the main headlined movie "Venom". These sub headings add more substance to the front cover as it displays more segments that are written about in the magazine which is bound to draw in the readers attention so long as they are interested in the subject matter which is movies and actors.
Skyline is used at the top of a magazine front cover usually in big and bold text in order to grab the readers attention and to tell the reader what the magazine is about for example in this front cover from Total Film it reads, "COMIC-BOOK PREVIEW". This will be sure to grab the readers attention if they are interested in comics as this means that they will likely buy the magazine just to see what comic book is talked about. This is a clever technique used by magazines to interest more readers as they will be instantly intrigued by the text at the top of the magazine.
Sub skyline is used underneath the skyline and adds more information at the top off the magazine to build up the hype of what the magazine includes. For example the sub skyline of the Total Film for cover reads, "AVENGERS 4 CAPTAIN MARVEL AQUAMAN WONDER WOMAN". This skyline lists different characters from both Marvel and DC which could interest the reader even more as they may be a fan of these characters from films that they have watched or comics that they have read.
Main Puff is used in a magazine to make text stand out as the text is usually displayed inside of a shape. A puff is a simple way of informing the reader about an article that's included within the magazine. In this case the Total Film magazine puff reads,"THE GREATEST MOVIES NEVER MADE". This is used to gain further interest of the reader when they look at the front cover as they may want to know about this information as they could either become disappointed that a certain movie was never made or even relieved that a certain movie was never made.
Pull Quote is used in a magazine front cover to draw in the readers attention to the magazine by using a quote that is said directly from someone who is a trusted source. For example, in this magazine front cover form Total Film, the pull quote reads,"Venom is enigmatic, charismatic, dangerous and scary" This shows the reader that the Actor who plays the main role in the film has a good opinion on the film therefore this will influence or convince the reader to watch the film and also want to read more in the magazine to find out what else Tom Hardy has to say about the film.
Drop caps are used to show the reader where to start reading from as the first letter of the paragraph is enlarged to fill up about two or more lines of text and this also makes the text stand out more to the reader which will draw in their attention to the text.

Barcodes are used in magazines to give the reader the ability to scan this barcode in order to possibly see a digital copy on their phones or visit the website of the magazine developers to gain more information. Also a barcode can be scanned which will give the reader more details of the magazine which will not be talked about in the actual copy of the magazine such as the contact details.
